Gustavo Carrera, 87, passed away peacefully in Houston on September 4, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. Gustavo was born on December 16, 1933 in Quito, Ecuador to Zoila Aurora Puga de Carrera and Segundo Vicente Carrera. He is survived by Julia Carrera, his beloved wife of 66 years, and their six children: Norma, Yolanda, Amparo, Maria Eugenia, Ana, and Gustavo; his sons-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Gustavo was born and raised in Quito, Ecuador. He served in the military in the 1950s in Quito before marrying the love of his life, Julia. He was a skilled electrical mechanic and owner of multiple businesses.
After the birth of their five daughters, Gustavo and Julia migrated from Ecuador to the United States where their son was born and eventually settled in Texas to raise their growing family. In their later years, Gustavo and Julia frequently traveled between their original home of Ecuador and Houston, never able to stay away from their family for too long. As the patriarch of the Carrera family and a first-generation immigrant to the United States, Gustavo instilled the importance of having both a close-knit, supportive family and a relentless work ethic in each of his children and grandchildren.
In his free time, Gustavo enjoyed cheering on his favorite Ecuadorian football team, El Nacional, playing volleyball with his friends and family, and traveling, whether it was driving through the mountains of Ecuador or around the world with his wife and their caring family.
Gustavo was a loving husband, doting father, and an amazing friend to all who were lucky enough to know him. He will always be remembered by his friends and family for his humility, unconditional generosity, welcoming heart to all he met, his adventurous spirit, and not to forget, his insatiable sweet tooth.
