

Hector Cardet, Sr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, and community leader, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2024. He was born on September 1, 1929, in Esperanza Las Villas, Cuba, and immigrated to the United States in October 1962, settling in Houston, TX, where he made an indelible mark.
Hector was married to his first wife, Gladys Cardet, from January 1954 until her passing in 1984. Together, they welcomed their daughter Maria in November 1957 and son Hector Jr. in April 1959. In May 1988, he remarried Derina Cardet, with whom he spent many joyful years.
Hector was a pioneer in Houston's Cuban community, establishing the first Cuban Grocery Store in February 1967, followed by a Cuban restaurant in 1969, and Cardet Wholesale in 1980. His entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to serving his community earned him widespread respect and admiration.
Beyond his business ventures, Hector was an avid athlete. He played in the Houston Cuban Baseball League for many years and later discovered a passion for golf, achieving an impressive six holes-in-one. He continued to play golf until the age of 91, embodying perseverance and love for the game.
An unwavering fan of the Houston Astros, Hector's enthusiasm for baseball was infectious, bringing joy to family gatherings and community events alike.
Hector is survived by his devoted wife Derina Cardet, his son Hector Cardet, daughter Maria Fernandez (married to Evelio Fernandez), and their children Marissa Abssi, Katrina Duranski, Andres Fernandez, and Kendra Fernandez. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren: Mia, Lilly, Aiden, Lucas, Chloe, and Olivia.
He is further survived by his stepsons and their wives, Alex & Piper Garcia, and Julio & Tracy Garcia, along with their children Julian, Gabby, Michael, and Quinn, whom he cherished as his own.
Hector Cardet, Sr. will be remembered for his resilience, generosity, and profound love for his family and community. His legacy will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
On June 20, a 9:30 am visitation and 11:30 am funeral service will be held at Earthman Bellaire Funeral Home to honor Hector’s life. A 2:00 pm graveside burial will follow at Memorial Oaks cemetery.
