Jim Hyland, age 65, passed away unexpectedly on May 9, 2011.

Jim was born in Newark, NJ in 1945 as the middle of three children of Luke and Rose Hyland. His older sister Nan Farrell remains in NJ, and his younger brother John Hyland resides in California. Despite the distance, the siblings remained tight, frequently calling and visiting. Jim moved to Texas to attend Tyler Junior College to play basketball. Basketball then led him to the University of St. Thomas in Houston, where he graduated in 1971.

Following college, Jim worked as a teacher, coach, and administrator at St. Francis de Sales School. 
After his years at St. Francis, he taught and coached varsity basketball at Strake Jesuit. Decades after leaving the teaching profession for a career in sales, he was still affectionately called "Coach Hyland" by many of his former students and players. During his years in sales, he endeared himself to many native Texans and Louisianans, despite being a self-professed Yankee. Through his various professions, he touched many lives and developed life-long friendships.

Jim will be sorely missed by: the love of his life, Patsy; son, Jimmy and his wife Laura; daughter, Laurie Mayor and her husband Jonathon; three grandchildren, Annie, Dominic, and Margaret; and numerous family members and friends. 

Memorials can be made to St. Francis de Sales School - Annual Fund or St. Francis de Sales Church – Capital Campaign, Houston, TX.

Patsy & family:  Max & I send our condolences and all of us will miss "The Gentle Saint" as Fr. Dinkins called him.  Max and the "Over 50" basketball bunch enjoyed their many years playing together at SFDS, Landsdale Park, 2nd Baptist Church and any place they could find an open court.  We enjoyed his company at our annual SFDS reunions and I don't think Jim ever said a discouraging word,  to the "OLDIES" even when he should have.  We will miss his smile & hearty laugh. I had the privilege of having coach teach me basketball for 4 years while at jesuit.  I will always remember the dr pepper and baloney sandwich party he hosted at his home for the team one year.  Simple. Fun.  Thoughts and prayers to his family.

I got to ride in his car to a track meet in '72 or '73 while attending St Francis de Sales. Coach was sad that day because he had just lost someone special to him. On that ride, we discussed how dying was a part of living. I remember he seemed comforted by that, as I am now. Coach is one of the most decent people I've known. His quick hearty laugh and love of people are memories I will treasure forever. It was an honor to play for him and a gift to remember him.

We loved Jim so much! He was a special person.  Of course your family knows that.  Like many others expressed he always had a smile on his face.  Jim was always so funny and kind to our family. As a boy I looked up to my coach and he was one of the best coaches and encouragement leaders that I have ever had. To this day I still remember him as a great coach and mentor of kids. May his family's grief be overcomed by all the positive encouragement that this man has left behind. In my mind, he can not be forgotten. He helped shape me to what I am today.   Since hearing of Jims death, my heart has gone out to you and the family.  Your loss must seem unbearable right now.  But if his value in this life is measured by the number of lives he touched for the good, you know he will be reaping a rich reward right now in heaven. 
  You were with Jim when he came to my rescue when Mark had fallen in the yard, and the two of you helped get him back in the house.  Do you know how much relief that little effort gave to our hearts?  And I still remember stopping on the way home from work whenever Jim was in the yard, and sharing some friendly news of fammily and friends in the neighborhood.  His ever-present smile and good will was a hallmark of his personality.
  Be consoled somehow in knowing that his mission here was done, and although he will be dreadfully missed by you and the family, he went leaving his unimaginable love for you, and knowing the time will come when you will be reunited forever.  
  Hopefully you can draw strength from those of us around you who love you, loved Jim, and want only to support you with our love here in this life.

As a kid/young man, one doesn't realize that a coach is also a son, husband, and dad.  To the Family of Coach Hyland, thank you so much for sharing him with us as he was a such a great example of what a man should become.  May your grief be soothed knowing he has provided so many great memories and that he is now with our Lord in Heaven.

May God show you the way to the glory of life. Your best friend has gone to make your place in Heaven and will be there at the gates waitng for your arrival. He will always watch over you. 
When you feel the wind brush across  your check , know that it is Jim just touching base. When you are asleep and awake suddenly, he will be the one that comforts you from beyond. He will be watching over each and everyone of you as if he was sitting in a lawn chair at a family picnic. He loved his family and made sure we all knew it just by the look in his face when he spoke of you. God Bless the family that lived in the presence of a great man.

Coach Hyland is exactly the type of man we all, as young men, hope to grow up to  become. My memories of Coach Hyland are a bit limited from the early 70s but I do recall he had a great laugh. I recall the days of football, soccer and (I tried) basketball! I wasn't very good at any of them but I don't recall any negativity from coach; he seemed to always be positive and inspiring. Good man...sad loss to this world; but he surely is now with the greatest Coach there is and ever will be.

Coah Hyland had such a positive influence on me and so many people during my time at St. Francis and Jesuit.  I was also lucky enough to see Coach a couple of times a year when back home visiting over the years.  I always enjoyed getting the chance to visit with him and catch up on what our families were up to.  I will truly miss those visits and his great sense of humor. Jim Hyland is one of the greatest guys I have had the privilege to call friend. We worked together 30 years ago at Jesuit. I can not think of a more genuine and sincere man than Jim. Coach, you will be missed by so many that you have touch through the years. How can I possibly add to so many of the nice things people have said in this guest book. My family will truly miss you as will I. God Bless you and the Hyland family.

We are all shocked and sad to hear that Coach Hyland has passed away.  I will always remember him as a gentle giant during my St. Francis years.  He was such a kind soul and I too was very glad when he became principal.  Patsy was my 2nd grade teacher and has always remained one of my favorities.  I also know that my brother, Mike, always had great memories of him as his coach.  Mike is now working in Afghanistan but would want to send his condolences along with the entire Golemi family.  You will be in our prayers!

Coach Hyland guided and influenced countless young lives.  There is no greater accomplishment in life.
I was fortunate enough to visit with Coach just last September.  He sincerely wanted to get together with the boys of that awesome SFDS Class of 1972.  It deeply saddens me only the memories of our mentor will be present.

I have thought of Jim often over the years, but especially when i was coaching a sport for one of my three children. His charisma, sense of humor, and genuine concern for his students meant more to us than perhaps Coach ever knew.  Mostly he led by example, earning respect and admiration. Jim was an  extraordinary individual. I admired him and enjoyed his friendship over the years. Jim was my Snapper Rep. and he was foremost, my friend! I still cannot believe he has gone from this world. Jim was a good man, a good father, a good teacher, and a great friend. In the last few years we shared the Aggie bond of our children. We laughed together and talked of "tailgating" this next year. I miss him already.I felt fortunate to meet his son this past football season. He is a fine young man just like his father. Laurie was a friend to my oldest daughter Ashley while at A&M their freshman year. She was a blessing as well. We appreciate all Jim  did for our family and our business. Patsy, I love you...

It is with sadness that I read the email from your Dad telling us of the passing of your precious Jim.  I know how much you love him. You two have been a shining example of what a marriage can be - the legacy you leave with your children and grandchildren will carry from generation to generation. And we all know where you learned about what makes a wonderful marriage - Mr. Wally and Ms. Yvonne.  

May the Lord hold you and Jimmy and Laurie and those grandbabies close. The good news is that you will see that mighty man of God again. You will stroll over Heaven with him one glad day.

The very first basketball coach I had was Coach Hyland at St. Francis. He also coached us in football. I can still remember us practicing on the outside asphalt basketball court and Coach shooting long range jumpers. Coach was always laughing and joking and I learned so much from him, he was a great role model to so many of us. He was a great guy and will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I was sad when I learned about Coach Hyland passing away. My condolences to Patsy, the kids and the rest of his family. I consider him to be family since I basically grew up with Coach at SFDS. He was there for all most the entire time I was and then followed our class to Jesuit. I guess he liked the class of  1977 so much he had to make the move with us or he knew what we were like and needed to make sure we stayed in school and out of prison! I have great memories of my time in school and he was a part of many of those especially coaching football and basketball. Chris Smith and I skipped practice one day to go to the drama meeting for the school play that was coming up soon. We told the teacher running the play that we really wanted to be in the play but she did not believe us and made us go back to practice. Coach was waiting for us and as we were running extra sprints, he was laughing and asking us what we were going to be in the play - A TREE!  When Coach became the all mighty Principal of the school. I was never as happy as the day they announced he was taking over. As I made my now weekly visit to the Principal’s, he was never surprised to see me there but as punishment, we would go play HORSE in the gym (aka the parking lot) after school and if I won, he would let me go. If he won, I had to run sprints or wash his car. Needless to say, he always had a clean car and I was in good shape for the BB season. He was definitely a great basketball player and I learned several moves and trick shots from him. As others have stated, he had a great laugh and many of my SFDS friends would try to imitate him but could never laugh as big as he could, especially David Deeba Dubba Duble. I put his laugh to the test when I saw him in the 90’s at the SFDS Bizarre as he was running the Over Under table. He was getting a kick out of taking my $5 bills as he rolled the dice. Needless to say, SFDS built a gym and he had a lot to do with that in so many ways…..thanks to Coach (and the dice). God speed Coach, you will be missed but never forgotten.

I loved, loved PE at St. Francis with Coach Hyland.  And also when he was at Jesuit as a coach.  He was just flat out great guy and coolest ever.  God Speed Jim Hyland!!

Coach Hyland was the first real coach a lot of us knew.  When he showed up at SFDS he quickly established himself as the coach by whom we would judge all future coaches.  A man of character, a great coach, and a cool guy; he upped our game in a lot of ways.  Rest in peace.

I had not spoken to coach Hyland since Jesuit, but he was always a favorite teacher and leader at both SFDS and Strake Jesuit. I am sorry to learn of his passing at such a young age.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Coach Hyland's passing. It's hard to put into words the impact that he had on my life and so many others that came through St. Francis and later Strake Jesuit. It was always such a pleasure to run into Coach after mass at St. Francis when we were home visiting family. It was incredible the way he took such an interest in our current lives and what was happening with us and our families. He will be missed greatly, and our thoughts and prayers go out to Patsy, Jimmy, and Laurie.

I was sorry to hear the news of Coach Hyland's death.  He was a great man who treated everyone with kindness and respect.  He had a wonderful laugh and loved to joke around with his students. Over the past couple of days several of us have been sharing funny stories and memories of Jim during our St. Francis days.  He had a positive influence on us during a time that we needed it.  Everytime I ran into Jim he was just as nice as I remember him at SFDS.  He would ask about my family and my friends from grade school.

I am very sad to hear of Coach's passing.  He greatly  influenced me  and many of my friends from 3rd-8th grade at St. Francis De Sales and then at Jesuit----A GREAT ROLL MODEL!.  He ALWAYS SMILED and loved to laugh.  I ran into him accidentally one day about 15 years ago here in Austin.  I own a lawn maintenance and landscaping company here and he was selling lawn maintenance products.  We stayed in touch a little and had lunch a couple of times.  He LOVED to talk about those that he coached and taught.  He even wanted  for us to get together with some of the guys that I went to school and played basketball  with.   He even wrote me a note a year ago to get together/talk,  but I failed to do so because distance and "too busy."   I regret that I did not  make it happen---I really wanted to.  Also, he LOVED to talk about his family----VERY PROUD!   Thanks Coach for the GREAT MEMORIES and  Rest In Peace!

I am lucky to have known Coach Hyland both at St. Francis and Strake Jesuit.  I was fortunate to run into him several times thereafter.  He was always very thoughtful, kind and considerate.  He had a quiet grace about him.

I am very sad to hear about Jims death . For a lot of us he was "coach" . I was in the first class at St.Francis de sales that Jim coached. We have been friends ever since. He always ask about family and I know he was very fond of my parents.  I wish the best for his wife and children ...

I am so sorry to hear of Jim (Coach) Hylands passing. I was just thinking of him and the impact he has been on my life last week. I wish I would have had the chance to let him know. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. We may have lost his physical presence here on earth but his influence will last for generations to come. Thanks Jim!

i am so sorry to hear about jim. he was truly a great man. he coached me in varsity basketball at jesuit and we worked together at gulf coast snapper later in life. i kept up with jim over the years and admired him for how  hard he worked for his family. he was so proud of them and talked about them constantly. my thoughts and prayers are with the hyland family . i considered jim a  good friend and will miss talking with him
