Jack was born in Winchester, Massachusetts; later moved to Norwell, Mass. where he lived until age 12, when his mother took he, his younger sister Nancy and brother Gray to Palo Alto, California, during the 1930’s. Jack grew up playing ice hockey and tennis. He played tennis on the Stanford University tennis team and won many tennis trophies, he played until he was 89 years old.
Jack had applied to West Point Academy when he was drafted into WWII. He was offered his choice of the branch of military in which he wished to serve. He chose the Army Air Corp. After basic training, Jack became a navigator. He was a proud member of the Jungle Air Corp serving in the Pacific Theater under General Douglas MacArthur. During his eleventh mission, his plane was shot down. His parachute failed to open until the minute he hit the ocean. Jack was dropped a life raft, rescued and sent to a hospital in Sydney, Australia to recover from multiple injuries. After his recovery He returned to his squadron and flew a total of 47 missions. Jack received many medals. Among them were the Purple Heart, expert marksman, many mission clusters and a special letter from the President. He proudly displays these in a special frame.
Education was very important to Jack as he obtained three degrees including a Ph.D. from Stanford University. He encouraged those working under him to pursue the highest education they could in the field in which they worked. Jack started his career in mineral exploration at Asarco. From there he was employed by Philippine Iron Mine and then Duval (Pennzoil), and lastly Exxon Corp. Jack was hired by Exxon to get them in the mineral (hard rock) business. After retiring from Exxon, he started Frost Minerals International Consulting Company. He remained as an active board member of Santa Fe Mining Co. until age 89.
Jack was a long-standing member of the Society of Economic Geologist (SEG). He was also a member of the American Institution of Mining, Metallurgical and Exploration (AIME) Society. Jack was appointed a “Fellow” on the Advisory Board of the School of Earth Sciences of Stanford University was and also elected “Fellow” of the Geologic Society of America. In 1983 he was awarded the Charles F. Rand Gold Medal from AIME. Jack served as President and Chairman of the Board of United Engineering from 1981-1989.
Singing in the church choir was a delight to Jack. He took voice lessons after he retired and was a member of the following: the King’s Men, Noah’s Choir and the Kitchen Band at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church. Jack was an avid collector of various interests – Stamps, Primitive African Art, as well as various water color and oil paintings. He had collected a large crystal (mineral) assortment of which he donated the majority of the crystals to the Mining Hall of Fame in Leadville, Colorado.
Jack and Ann met at church and immediately fell in love and have been on their honeymoon for seven years. Ann moved into Colonial Oaks facility last October to be with Jack and to complete his memoirs which were a great source of pride to Jack. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Jack was lovingly preceded in death by his Mother, Hazel Carley Frost and Father, Elliott Putnam Frost. His daughter, Elizabeth (Bobby) Frost, sister, Nancy Frost McCarthy, brother Richard Gray Frost and wife Carolyn Kaitlin Frost also preceded Jack in death. Jack is survived by his Wife, Ann Jones-Frost, Daughters, Teresa Baird Frost and Virginia (Ginny) Nichol Frost Owen ( Jim). Sons John Crocker (Kitty) and Jeffrey Putman Frost (Lynn). Granddaughters, Kristy Frost Janosek, Carley Frost Koivista and Hope Redhawk. Grandsons, Eric Frost and Jeff B. Frost. Great- grandchildren, Jonathan Nelson, Madison Koivista, Austin Koivista, Tyler Frost, Jaxon Frost and Ciera Frost.
Memorial services will be held at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, 12955 Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas on May 22, 2021. In lieu of flowers Jack requested donations be sent to feed the homeless through Gracegate Ministries, 4027 Young Street, Pasadena Texas 77504.
