Skip was born on February 4, 1952, in Beaumont, Texas, to Mildred Katherine Bahil and John Franklin Moon. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, brother Chuck Moon, and son John Taber Moon. Skip is survived by his loving wife of nearly 29 years, Denise Wilson Moon; son, Jay Tyler Moon; stepdaughters, Amy Gnau and Julie Crosby; and eight grandchildren: Celeste Moon, Campbell Gnau, Everett Gnau, Annabelle Gnau, Georgia Gnau, Caleb Crosby, Easton Crosby, and Hudson Crosby. He is also survived by his brother, Joe Moon (Debby); nephews, Jimmy Moon, Zachary Moon, and niece, Zoe Moon.
Skip was known for his generous, unselfish nature. He always helped others, whether he knew them or not. He was a great neighbor, and everyone on the block knew him. Skip was an athlete; he played baseball and football and excelled in track, specifically the intermediate hurdles. He received a full scholarship to the University of Arkansas for track. His father gave him a 1970 yellow Plymouth Road Runner in appreciation. Skip cherished the car and spoke about it years later.
Skip graduated in 1978 from the University of Arkansas with a B.S. in Business Administration. He married at age 19 and had two sons by age 22. Wanting to support his young family, he took a few years off and opened Skip’s Pastry Shop. However, he felt it was important to finish college and earn his degree. Always a hard worker, Skip rarely complained; he only said he felt like he missed part of his youth by getting married at a young age, working, raising his sons, and finishing school.
He worked various accounting jobs and lived in many places such as: Tulsa, El Paso, and Dallas before getting divorced and moving to Houston. He worked at Tenneco and joined the company’s running club, competing in numerous races. He was training for the Houston Marathon when he injured his knee, which resulted in his running days being cut short. He left Tenneco to work for Natural Gas Clearinghouse (which later became Dynegy), where he spent 11 years. During that time, he met Denise and remarried in 1996.
Following, he joined OpenLink Financial, a software provider for energy companies specializing in energy trading and risk management. Skip worked at OpenLink for 11 years. He was initially hired as a Business Analyst and traveled extensively during his tenure to Omaha, NE; Thomasville, GA; and Los Angeles, CA. He was promoted to Principal Business Analyst, but the travel eventually became difficult, now understood to be an early sign of Alzheimer’s. He retired in 2018.
The family wishes to thank Belmont Village Hunters Creek, specifically Memory Care, for the loving care Skip received during his three and a half years there.
They are also grateful to Bayou City Hospice for providing comfort, dignity, and quality of life in his final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like memoriams to be sent to Amazing Place.
