Lauren was born in the Bronx, New York on January 12, 1957, to Vincent John and Dorothy (Kaufman) Bensi. She was raised in a close-knit, gregarious family, guided by a strong mother and a loving father. When Lauren was a young child the family moved to Port Washington, New York, where Lauren graduated from Paul D. Schreiber High School in 1975. She was a superb athlete growing up, playing softball with her dad’s team (the only girl), field hockey, basketball and of course, tennis — her love. During her high school years, Lauren was ranked in the top 100 female tennis players nationally in the United States Tennis Association. She selected Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, for many reasons, but most of all, for the tennis program.
Having found her way to Texas, she became a “naturalized citizen” and made the state her home after graduating from Trinity in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and Sociology. Lauren settled in Houston, where she had a professional banking career until 1992, when she decided to follow her grandfather, father and two brothers by pursuing a long-held dream of becoming an attorney. She graduated from Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston in 1995, and began a solo practice focused on family law, wills, probate and trust administration.
Lauren loved to cook and was always planning the next party or informal get-together of friends and neighbors at her house. She will be remembered for her lasagna, her spaghetti and meat balls, her grilling expertise and her ability to make everyone laugh. While she loved to have a great time, she also cherished her down time at home with her best friend and long-time housemate, Chris Bozman, as well as with their precious dogs through the years — Scruffy, Shadow, Cruiser and Razzle. She was a very patriotic American and Texan, an avid Green Bay Packers, Houston Texans and Houston Astros fan, and a strong believer in God and her Jewish faith.
Lauren was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Phillip Bensi. She is survived by her brother, Andrew R. Bensi, of East Meadow, New York, as well as many other family members, wonderful neighbors and friends. She touched far more lives than she ever realized, and she will be remembered and missed for her honesty, her wisdom and her big heart.
