Laverne KuuLei Chang passed away in Houston, TX on July 2, 2025. She was born on April 27th, 1950, in Honolulu, Hawaii to Winona Lani Lum Ho and Solomon Chang. She is survived by her loving husband Roger Schuler; brother Clifford Chang; nephew Eric Onishi; niece Allison Onishi & her husband Joe Lang; great-nephews Jesse & Brady Lang; sister-in-law and nephew Jennifer and Darren Chang and her ohana of aunties, uncles, and cousins.
Laverne graduated in 1968 from Kamehameha Schools and moved to Houston in 1980, putting new roots into Texas. She worked for City of Bellaire for many years and earned a degree in business from the University of Houston. She and Roger enjoyed going to restaurants in Houston, spending time in the peaceful forests of Cloudcroft, New Mexico, and especially relaxing into their yurt-life on the Big Island of Hawaii.
She was a spirited and determined lady, whose loyalty and generosity was known by many—friends near and far from Hawaii to Texas, colleagues from work, and the family who will miss her most. A long-time member of the Hawaiian Aikane Club, she found community and performed Hawaiian music alongside her beloved sister Leiola. Her talent came out through her love of music, singing, playing the ukulele & guitar, and encouraging others to pursue their musical passions.
Her legacy, wisdom, and supportive heart will live on through all who loved her. Aloha 'Oe to a very special person.
No funeral services are planned at this time. Laverne will be cremated and laid to rest with her family in Hawaii. Memorial services may occur at a later date.
