Lewis Douglas “Doug” Deatherage, 60, died December 15, 2018 following a heart attack. A native Houstonian and the third of six children, he was born August 22, 1958, to Dr. and Mrs. Lewis W. Deatherage.
Doug attended Sharpstown High School and Texas A&M University. He went on to a career in financial services, highlighted by 18 years with Digital Equipment Corporation, Compaq, and Hewlett-Packard.
In his youth, Doug played many sports--the star of neighborhood fields and courts alike--and remained an avid sports fan. Within his family, he always retained his title as the Fred Astaire and an accomplished balladeer. He also enjoyed memory and word games, kindled by Readers Digest vocabulary tests with his grandmother. He was active in bridge clubs and dinner clubs over the years and often cooked for and entertained his many friends and relatives.
In his early years, Doug was involved at both St. Albert and St. Thomas More Catholic Churches in Houston. While a parishioner of St. Albert, he served as the youngest parish council president. Later, he dedicated himself to St. Thomas More Parish and their music ministry, serving until his death as pianist for countless choir rehearsals, weekly Mass, and other church services, as well as helping organize an annual fundraising musical event.
Doug’s loyalty to his friends knew no bounds and they generously reciprocated. He is survived by his parents; siblings Suzanne Deatherage, James (and Rebecca) Deatherage, Katie Deatherage-Kamanes (and Charles), Marcie (and Richard) Avery, and Michael Deatherage; beloved nieces Ashley (and Corey) Palasota and Sara (and John) Metzinger; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 20, 2018 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Earthman Southwest Funeral Home 12555 South Kirkwood, Stafford, TX 77477. Mass of Christian Burial is Friday, December 21, 2018 at 10:30 AM at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 10330 Hillcroft St., Houston, TX 77096.
