She was born to the late Jimmie Q. Cain and Grace McElven Cain on January 11, 1923, in Summit, MS. Lois graduated from high school in 1940, where she was a basketball star, being named an All State Guard her senior year. Progressive for her time, she attended and graduated from Business College in Baton Rouge.
In 1942, only 3 months after meeting, she married Karl Joseph Helm on Christmas Eve. In 1949, after moving to several Texas towns following Karl’s construction jobs, they settled in Bellaire, Texas, to raise their three children. Lois was a long standing member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bellaire. She was a proud, hard-working mother who built a beautiful home for her family. Later in life, she worked 19 years for Zales, where she often received recognition for being top salesman.
Lois enjoyed sports and could easily give the latest stats on her favorite teams, the Houston Rockets and Astros. She was an avid bowler, spending many wonderful years playing in leagues and tournaments. One of her greatest joys was sitting down with friends and family to play, and usually win, any card games. Because of her kind spirit and large heart, Lois brought joy to all and continued making friendships even through her last days.
Lois is survived by a large, loving family including her children, Karlene Griffin (husband Norman), George Helm (wife Lauran), and Karen Ellison (husband Gene); grandchildren Michael Copeland (wife Erin), Dana Griffin (husband Terry Gilman), Keith Copeland, Stacy Spears (husband Jason), Katie Smith (husband Garrett) and Abbey Helm; Great-grand children Mia and Cain Copeland, Avery and Griffin Spears, Grayson Smith, and Michael, Matthew and Thomas Gilman. She is also survived by extended family members Dennis and Ruth Helm, Ann Landry, Bobbie Nell Helm, Gary and Elizabeth Rosetti, Bryant and Jane Cain, and Coot Cain, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, who also had a special place in her heart.
