Lynn G. Hollingsworth

Lynn entered the presence of the Lord on June 30, 2026, aged 98 years and 364 days. She was a faithful Christian, attending first Christian Church of Houston and accepting Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was a student of the Bible and taught a women’s Sunday School class for over 60 years. In the Bible when Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment of the law is, Jesus replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” Lynn’s life was filled with love for God and love for others. She exemplified the Fruit of the Spirit as described in Galatians 5:22-23, which are traits that the Holy Spirit produces in the lives of believers – Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self Control.

Lynn was born July 1, 1927, in Houston, Texas to parents Erwin John Goodman and Lillie Buchannan Goodman. Lynn was the youngest of three children, along with her sister Ann and her brother John. She grew up in Southside Place and attended West-University Elementary school and graduated from San Jacinto High School in Houston in 1944. Lynn enrolled at Texas State College for Women in Denton, Texas in 1944. At that time, she dropped her given first name, Wilma, and went by her middle name, Lynn, for the rest of her life. That is a fact that you probably did not know about her.

Lynn graduated from college in 1948 with a degree in Physical Education. In those days, the head of that Physical Education department took an active role in helping place graduates in jobs. She located a job for Lynn as a Physical Education teacher at Delta State College in Cleveland, Mississippi. This was a big change for Lynn to take up a new life in Mississippi. Many of her students were former servicemen who were returning to college on the G.I. Bill. One student was Walter Hollingsworth from Petal, Mississippi.

Lynn and Walter were married in Houston on June 30, 1950 at the home of her parents on Jardin Street. They were both P.E. Teachers and both taught for a couple of years in Mississippi and Louisiana before returning to Houston where Lynn became a stay-at-home mom while Walter taught P.E. and coached Football for HISD. They were very active in their church, First Baptist of Bellaire, TX. When it closed, Lynn moved her membership to Central Bellaire Baptist and then later, West University Baptist Church. She developed close friendships with the Pastors, Staff and members at all of the churches she attended.

Lynn and Walter were married for 53 years, 9 months, and two weeks, until his death in 2004.

Their house was the gathering place for family, especially on Thanksgiving and Christmas. On Thanksgiving the meal was the traditional turkey with a host of casseroles, desserts and of course Sister Schubert rolls. Her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and others, loved her homemade M&M Cookies which she still made from scratch this last year.

Lynn was blessed with 2 children, Becky (James). David (Anna), son-in-law Olan (Mary Anne). She had 5 grandchildren, Lisa, Michael (Stephanie), Katie (Thomas), Clair (Phillip) and Melanie, and 11 great grandchildren, Morgan, Madilynn, Meghan, Charlie, Aubrey, Isaac, Reagan, Edmund, Mikey, Benedict, and Maggie. She took great interest in their lives and was proud of all of them. She loved to be around her grandchildren and great grandchildren. They would play board games like Rummy Royal and King on the Corner. She is also survived by several loving nieces, nephews and numerous friends.

Lynn lived at Clarewood House in Independent Living for 8 years. She made many friends among the staff and residents. She was a good friend to Chaplain Will. During her time there she participated in many activities including their chapel services, hymn singing, Christian Fellowship, Bible study and Brain Games. Lynn loved the fried catfish at Clarewood. When catfish Friday came around on the menu she would invite several close friends from outside of Clarewood to join her. Her daughter, Becky, would often join them.

Lynn had a sharp mind. It was a blessing to hear her tell vivid stories of her childhood, about meeting Walter, and their life together. She could name all the US States and their Capitals in alphabetical order.

Lynn will be remembered for her faith, sweet spirit, and her love for the Astros who she faithfully watched and rooted for. She loved God and she loved her family and friends.

Visitation will be held at Earthman Bellaire Funeral Home, 4525 Bissonnet St., Bellaire, TX 77401, on July 16, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A celebration of Life will be held at Clarewood House, 7400 Clarewood Drive, Houston, Texas 77036, on Saturday, July 18 at 1:00 pm.
