Mary Ryerson

May 16, 1922October 4, 2020

Mary Ryerson, 98, of Houston, Texas, passed away on October 4, 2020. She was born on May 16, 1922 to parents Adolfo and Maria Menacho in Huacho, Peru, as one of three children.

While in Peru, Mary met her husband, Hal Ryerson, and they had one son together. They were married for over 45 years. A native of California, Hal started and ended his career in the US Foreign Service, and also worked abroad for multinational pharmaceutical companies. Mary and Hal lived in many countries in Latin America, including Ecuador, Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras, Jamaica, Brazil, Colombia, and Chile. After Hal’s retirement, Mary and Hal moved to New Hampshire, ending up in Lake Sunapee, New Hampshire, where they enjoyed many happy years together, including becoming realtors in the area. Hal passed away in 1989 and Mary moved to Houston, TX to be close to her son and grandchildren.

Mary was a dedicated wife and mother, and also enjoyed varied interests. She was gifted with extraordinary talents and creativity. She was an avid skier (well into her 80’s), and enjoyed painting, interior decoration and design, travel, languages (she was fluent in French, as well as bilingual in English and Spanish), and utilized her mind as much as possible. She did not enjoy cooking, or so she claimed, but she would cook wonderful meals for her extended family every chance she could. She was never one to let her age hold her back and would giggle at those who ever thought to bring it up. She loved to dance, especially at her grandchildren’s weddings, and whenever she was with family, there was always an enormous smile on her face. The feeling was reciprocated as Mary was beloved and adored by her son, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

After being widowed, she traveled to many parts of the world with her family members and tour groups, including China and Europe, and had a great joy of life. She was a member at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and a very active member in the West University Senior Center (whom she affectionately referred to as ‘The Old Goats’).

Mary cherished every moment of her life, and lived every day to the fullest. Her enthusiasm for life was contagious to those around her, and a lasting gift to each and every member of her family, who will always smile at her memory and be filled with gratitude to have been a part of her extraordinary life. She is preceded in death by her parents, Adolfo and Maria Menacho, her brothers, Alberto Menacho and Adolfo Menacho, and her husband, Hal Ryerson.

Mary is survived by her son, Carlos Alberto Ryerson; granddaughter, Rachel (Chris) Huk and their children Julian and Edward Huk; her grandson Carlos (Polly) Alexander Ryerson and their children Gazzie, Guy, and Knowles Ryerson; her grandchildren Tristan and Julianna Ryerson; her niece Teresa (Luis) Rey and their child Alessandra Rey; niece Maria Sol Menacho, nephew Alberto Menacho, and his son Alberto.

A private Funeral Mass will be held for Mary on Friday, October 16th at 10:00 AM. Those that wish may join the livestream on YouTube through St. Vincent de Paul’s channel at
