Mike Richardson Ledford went to be with the Lord on February 6th, 2018 surrounded by the family he adored. Mike was born September 15th, 1931 in Sewell, Chile while his father was overseas working in the mining industry. Mike was preceded in death by his parents Michael Alford Ledford and Zeda Favor Campbell, when he was just 21, and by his sister Jane Ledford Voulgaris. He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 59 years, Marie, daughter and son-in-law Mina and Will Jaco, grandchildren Reid, Kent, and Bret Jaco, sister Katherine Studhalter, niece Sandy Jansen, and nephews Bruce Williams, Jim Voulgaris, Dennis Voulgaris, and Mike Luckenbill.
Mike grew up in the Spring Branch and Rice Village areas of Houston and attended Lamar High School, Texas A&M University, where he was a scholarship member of the swim team, and graduated from the University of Houston after returning home to take care of his younger sister Katherine upon his parents’ death. Mike served in the U.S. Army and then met Marie, the love of his life, while lifeguarding on the beach in Cape May, NJ. After getting married, Mike eventually returned to Houston. He enjoyed a long career with the City of Houston administration and his many and varied hobbies of hunting and fishing, swimming, collecting, fixing all manner of things and most of all doting on his family. He especially enjoyed the time he spent with Marie and family at their second home on Bastrop Bayou and the many loyal dog companions he had during his life. Mike lived life to the fullest and was a generous and loving husband, father, grandfather, and dependable friend to many. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Mike’s family would like to thank all the City of Houston EMS first responders and compassionate and dedicated doctors and nurses at CHI St. Luke’s Hospital who worked so hard to revive and treat him. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, Office of Development, 4461 TAMU, College Station, TX 77843-4461, or to the charity of your choice.
