Miriam Fisher Gentry

Dr. Miriam Clare Fisher Gentry, 87, of Atlanta, Georgia and Houston, Texas passed away on September 10, 2026. She was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the daughter of Miriam Boyd Fisher and Rayburn Jerome Fisher. Survivors include beloved daughter, Clare Nicole Gentry; son-in-law Steven Michael Lorch; and grandchildren Vivian Amelia Lorch, Matthew James Lorch, and Jonathan Michael Lorch, all of Houston, Texas; sister Vivian Boyd Fisher; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Bridges Fisher; and nieces Elizabeth Anne Fisher (Kevin Reimer) and Vivian Bridges Fisher (Judith Eustace). She was preceded in death by her brother, Rayburn Jerome Fisher, Jr, and brother-in-law, James Henry Newcome.

Dr. Gentry graduated from Ramsay High School in Birmingham, Alabama. She earned a BA degree from Duke University and an MD degree from Emory University School of Medicine. She completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Grady/Emory Affiliated Hospitals, and a fellowship at Stanford Medical Center.

Dr. Gentry practiced internal medicine for 49 years, initially for several years at the University of Texas Medical Centers in both San Antonio and Houston. She then returned to the Emory Department of Internal Medicine where she was an Associate Professor. Dr. Gentry served for many years as the Director of the Emory University Student Health Service and was a President of the Southern College Health Association. She later worked at Emory Hospital and Wesley Woods Geriatric Center. After her retirement from Emory in 2001, Dr. Gentry practiced medicine in Ellijay, Georgia until 2014.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. A memorial service will be held in November in Atlanta.
