
Miriam Eleanor Harris Young was born in New Brockton, Alabama, on April 17, 1918, and grew up on her family farm. She contracted polio at the age of three months and had operations in Atlanta and Warm Springs, Georgia, where she dined with President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1934. She met and married Robert Donald Young during a whirlwind courtship in Montgomery, Alabama, at the end of World War II, and they raised their family in Poughkeepsie, New York. In 1965, they moved to Houston, Texas, where Miriam taught mathematics and later worked as a guidance counselor at Lamar High School. Retiring in 1983, she enjoyed many wonderful cruises with her friends. She moved to Bayou Manor in 2001, where she continued to play bridge and visit with her many friends until she passed away on February 10, 2013. She is survived by her daughter Ginger of Ashland, Virginia; son Robert of Hockley, Texas; grandson Coulter George and wife Daphne Gerling of Charlottesville, Virginia; granddaughter Anna George and husband David Neely of Chattanooga, Tennessee; and ten nieces and nephews, who loved her as Aunt Mim. She is preceded in death by her parents, five siblings, and her beloved husband, Bob. A memorial service will be held at Bayou Manor, 4141 South Braeswood on Friday, March 15, 2013, at 1:00pm.
