Naomi Patricia Trigg Schoppe went home to heaven, September 19, 2016. She was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 29, 1930 to Roy and Juanita Trigg. Naomi grew up in Galveston, Texas across from the seawall. She took walks along the beach most every day and loved picking up the pretty seashells. She attended Ursuline Academy. In 1939, Naomi was crowned “Little Miss Mardi Gras”. After graduating from Incarnate Word College in San Antonio, Texas in 1950, Naomi worked in a pathology lab in Galveston, Texas. In 1954, Naomi married Francis Schoppe and was a wonderful mother to her five children.
Naomi was a supermom preparing homemade meals daily, carpooling the kids, sewing the children’s clothes, curtains, and costumes, decorating the house and gardening. Naomi was proud of her extensive porcelain doll collection. She also loved watching old movies. Naomi read her newspaper daily, and enjoyed her afternoon tea, while keeping up with the world news. Naomi loved looking at family photos and scrapbooks and we spent many nights with the slide projector having slideshows.
When Mardi Gras returned to Galveston in the 1990’s, Naomi became very involved. One year she rode in the parade being celebrated for her past title of Little Miss Mardi Gras 1939. She also walked and rode in many other parades during the following years. She attended the Mardi Gras Special Peoples Ball at Moody Center in Galveston, nearly every year for 25 years, attending her last ball this year in February 2016.
Naomi was such a sweet, gentle, selfless and loving person. Always an optimist, she never complained about anything. Naomi enjoyed life no matter what the day brought. Her beautiful smile was contagious. She was truly a Christian role model and influenced every life that she touched. We will miss her deeply.
