Ned was born in Nitro, West Virginia, into a family that rarely stayed put. His father’s work moved them from town to town, and Ned finished high school in Alabama. Houston is where he finally found home, and he embraced it fully. He followed and cheered for every Houston team, through the wins and the heartbreaks.
He was a proud University of Houston Cougar. He earned his undergraduate degree and his doctorate in education there, then went back to teach political science. Ned never met a book he didn’t want to read or a piece of history he didn’t want to dig into. He could talk politics for hours, and you’d usually walk away having learned something.
In 1982, Ned married the love of his life, Sylvia. Her four children and his three daughters became what he affectionately called the “M-T Bunch.” His favorite title, though, was Papa. Some of his happiest days were spent in the pool, surrounded by splashing grandkids. Those afternoons of laughter are memories his family will hold onto forever.
Ned is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sylvia Moss; his children Rhonda Chuter, Shannon Hutchins, Erika Silva, Stacey Williams, Angela Thompson, Amy Behan, and Wade Thompson; and his brother, Paul Moss.
He was Papa to 17 grandchildren: Dallas, Jordyn, and AJ Chuter; Everett and Wyatt Hutchins; Gabe and Simeon Silva; Avery, Claire, and Calvin Williams; Jordyn, Sarah, Lawson, and Kyle Behan; and Will, Emily, and James Thompson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Moss and Zell Hawkins Moss; his brother, Shepherd Moss; and his sister, June Templet.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, October 16, 2026, at Earthman Bellaire Funeral Home.
His love, his curiosity, and his kindness will live on in the family he cherished. Rest in peace, Papa.
