
Penelope Penny Solomos of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2014. She was born November 10, 1930, in Xirokambi, Greece, to parents Elias and Stavroula Stavrakos. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Eric, and her brother John Stavrakos.
Penny leaves behind her loving daughter, Helen. She is survived by her brother Louis Stavrakos and wife Politimi; nephews John Stavrakos, Theodore Stavrakos, wife Anna and family; sister in law Maria Stavrakos; sister in law and brother in law Barbara and Frank Hagan; nephew Joseph Zwicker, wife Maggie and family, and many dear friends.
Penny met and married her husband, Eric, in 1949 when he worked for the US Government for the Restoration of Greece after WWII.
Coming to the United States in 1950, they made their home in Spartanburg, South Carolina. In 1959, they moved to Houston and became members of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church.
She worked many years in Alterations at both Sakowitz and Neiman-Marcus Department Stores before retiring in 1995. She then spent her time tending to her garden and volunteering at church where she was active in many projects such as the Greek Festival, dyeing Easter Eggs, making Prosforo for Sunday Services, and preparing Kollyva for Memorial Services. She was also very involved with the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. Penny received great satisfaction in her volunteer work and was beloved by all.
Penny was a life member of American Legion Post 77; life member of VFW Post 5619; life member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary James T. Hall Chapter 9; and life member of the Texas LST Association. She was also a proud member of the Daughters of Penelope, Achaia Chapter 54; The Philoptochos Society; and the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral Senior Citizen's Group.
Family visitation will be held Tuesday, October 21, 2014, from 5:00-7:00pm with the Trisagion Service 6:30pm at Earthman Funeral Home, 6700 Ferris St., Houston, Texas. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 22, 2014, 10:00am at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 3511 Yoakum Blvd., Houston, Texas, 77006. Interment Service will be held Thursday, October 23, 2014, 10:00am, at the Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas, 77038.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Senior Citizen's Group at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
