Phyllis Beth Zubel

She was born Phyllis Beth Mills to Donald and Helen Mills on June 11, 1928 in East Liverpool, Ohio. She attended public schools in Newell, West Virginia and then Mount Union College and West Virginia University, graduating from WVU in 1950 with a degree in Home Economics.

In 1950 she married the love of her life, Ambrose (Andy) Dominic Zubel. Shortly after being wed the couple moved to Newell, WV, where Andy coached at Chester High School and she taught elementary school. In 1954 they moved to Hamilton, New York where Andy was a football coach at Colgate University. After three years at Colgate she and Andy moved to Houston, Texas when Andy got a job coaching football at the University of Houston. She has resided in Houston since that time.

In 1958 she gave birth to her only child, Michael Andrew and spent the next 18 years being a fantastic wife and mother. When Michael turned 18 she returned to the work force as a clerk for the Houston Independent School District Special Education Resource Service where she worked until retirement.

In 1994 her first grandchild, Valerie Paige, was born followed in 1996 by a second grandchild, Zachary James. As amazing as Phyllis was as a mother she was born to be a grandmother. She loved the kids with all her heart and they loved her. She was their protector, care giver, teacher and friend. Her house was always “safe house”. She was such a natural grandmother that she came to be an additional grandma to many of the kid’s friends. Her presence for young people was always steadying and inspiring.

She is survived by her son Michael and wife Eva, and grandchildren Valerie Paige and Zachary James.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Andy, grandson Matthew, and parents Helen and Donald Mills.

Friends may visit Saturday, October 6, 2018 at Earthman’s Funeral Home, 4525 Bissonnet, Bellaire, TX from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm immediately followed by a Funeral Service. Phyllis will be buried at Union Cemetery in Freestone, TX at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday October 7th.
