He was born in Niagara Falls, New York on November 4m 1943 to the late Robert Harry and Ruth Barbara Greenwood and graduated from East High School in Wichita, Kansas in 1962. He received a BA from Wichita State University in Wichita, KS in 1966 and an MBA from the University of Indiana in Bloomington, IN in 1972.
Upon graduation from Wichita State where he participated in ROTC, he was commissioned as a First Lieutenant. He subsequently served overseas in Germany, Vietnam, Turkey, and Korea. He also was stationed at Huntsville, AL; Fayette, NC; at the Pentagon in Washington, DC; Colorado Springs, CO; and at the Army’s Command and General Staff College in Leavenworth, KS.
After retiring from the Army as Lieutenant Colonel, he was Manager of the Nordic Track stores in Oak Park and Metcalf South Malls in Overland Park, KS. Then he became the Ground Transportation Manager at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport in St. Louis, MO. While living in Des Moines, IA, he was President of the Southern Oaks Home Owners Association.
His public service also included volunteering as a tax preparer with United Way and providing amateur radio support—HAM call sign KC4VG—for public events such as the Iowa State Fair parade and the Marine Corp Marathon in Washington, DC as well as walks and marathons in other cities. He also participated in drills for disasters and emergencies when amateur radio operators might be called upon to assist. His other interests included traveling, swimming, scuba diving and reading.
He is survived by his wife Lynn Finley Greenwood, his brother Larry and his wife Melanie Greenwood; his sister Susan and her husband Ken McAlister. Others include his nieces, nephews and their children: Heidi K. Greenwood Doell and her husband Jon and their children Isaac, Aaron, and Samuel; Theodore Greenwood and his daughter Alexandra; Heather Caitlin Underwood and her husband Tony and their children Scarlett and Orion; and his nephew Andrew Scott McAlister.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, 5:00 pm September 21, 2024 at Calvary Methodist Church, 2525 N Rock Rd., Wichita, KS.
