Ruth was born in Brooklyn, New York, on July 14, 1939, to Alexander and Belle Merrens. From an early age, she showed a deep love of learning, a natural curiosity about the world, and a strong sense of purpose that guided her throughout her life.
She graduated from New York University with a degree in Education, beginning with a lifelong dedication to teaching and intellectual growth. It was in New York that she met the love of her life, Joseph David Chodrow. When Joe was offered a position at NASA to work on the Apollo 11 project, Ruth embraced a new adventure, and together they moved to Houston, a city that became their home for decades.
Ruth devoted more than 30 years to education within the Houston Independent School District, shaping countless students with patience, high expectations, and genuine care. Her passion for teaching extended beyond the classroom, as she also taught religious education at several synagogues, including Congregation Beth Yeshurun.
She believed deeply in the power of learning, not just in school but in life. Ruth loved to travel and found joy in discovering new places, cultures, and ideas. She was also a passionate supporter of the performing arts and took great pleasure in ballet, opera, and symphony performances, experiences she cherished and often shared with her friends.
Above all, Ruth loved her family. She is survived by her three sons, Alan Chodrow and his wife Yvette, Michael Chodrow, and Kevin Chodrow and his wife Bergitte, as well as her two beloved grandchildren, Skyler Chodrow Carlson and her husband Bailey, and Kate Chodrow.
Ruth approached each day with warmth, intelligence, and enthusiasm, qualities that will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy lives through the students she inspired, the family she raised, and the countless people whose lives were enriched by her presence.
