Sergio M. Garcia passed away on Thursday, March 17, following a long illness. He is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Taylor Garcia; his mother Charmaine Garcia and Travis Millican; his girlfriend Cassandra Neace; his father and stepmother Dr. Jose and Elena Garcia; and his grandmother Elena Garcia of El Paso, in addition to a long list of aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends, most notably the McCarthy family, Dr. John and Kathy, and their three children, Sean, Kevin, and Jessica.
He attended St. Thomas More Parish School and graduated from Strake Jesuit College Preparatory in 1998. He briefly attended St. Louis University before becoming ill for the first time. His illness prevented him from completing his studies at that time, and so he joined the workforce, moving up the ladder at Williams Sonoma from stock associate to store manager. He was with the company for 11 years before deciding to return to school. He completed a Bachelors degree in Retailing and Consumer Science from the University of Houston in 2014.
Sergio was a dedicated foodie, a diehard sports fan, and, most importantly, a devoted friend. He will be remembered for his incredibly giving nature, whether it was his eagerness to recommend a new restaurant and support a small business or his willingness to give the last few dollars in his pocket to someone who needed them more than he did. He actively supported St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and the Alzheimer’s Association.
It is in this spirit of giving that Sergio became an organ donor. Sergio was awaiting a double organ transplant. His story did not end the way that we had hoped, but we are sure that he would want us all to follow his example. In his memory, we ask that you please consider becoming organ donors yourself. In the meantime, we encourage those that can to donate blood to the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Bank.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a fund for his daughter’s college education. Please visit gofundme.com/sergiogarcia to donate.
