Sr. Brendan O’Donnell, C.V. I., a cherished member of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament, entered eternal life on June 16, 2026, at the age of 97. Born on January 2, 1929, in Westport, County Mayo, Ireland, she was one of eleven siblings raised in a close‑knit family rooted in faith, hard work, and deep affection for one another. Her Irish upbringing shaped her entire life—her humor, resilience, generosity, and unmistakable warmth. She entered the convent in Houston in 1948.
Sr. Brendan received both her BS in Education and her MA in American History from the University of Houston. She served as an elementary school teacher and principal in both the Diocese of Beaumont and the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. After many years in the classroom, she served as the Development Director at both Marian High School and Incarnate Word Academy, where her leadership, dedication, and gift for building relationships made her an excellent fundraiser, advancing the missions of both schools. She retired from the Academy in 2010. Throughout her years of service, she formed countless friendships, each one becoming dear to her as extended family members.
Sr. Brendan was known for her quick Irish wit, her compassion for those who had less, and her remarkable ability to make every person feel seen and welcomed. Her prayerfulness and her devotion to her religious community were constants in her life, grounding her in joy and purpose.
In her spare time, Sr. Brendan found delight in crocheting, and many were blessed to receive one of her beautiful afghans—each one crafted with patience, love, and a touch of her Irish spirit. She loved anything connected with people. She loved being part of the family life of so many of her friends.
Sr. Brendan remained deeply connected to her Irish roots, carrying her homeland in her heart and sharing its stories, humor, and traditions with all who knew her. She brought the best of Ireland to the United States—its warmth, its faith, its music, and its love of people.
Her final days were marked by peace, love, and joy, a reflection of the God she served so faithfully. Sr. Brendan leaves behind her religious community, her nieces, nephews, and extended family in Ireland and beyond, and many good friends, whose lives were brightened by her presence.
All services will be at Villa de Matel Chapel, 6510 Lawndale Street, Houston, Texas 77023. The wake service will be on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at 5:00 p.m., and the Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, July 3, 2026, (https://vimeo.com/event/6011790/b4e304abd6?fl=so&fe=fs) at 10:30 a.m. The interment will be at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.
