Sr. Carita Ulm, O.P. (Rose Marie) entered eternal life on Friday, May 8, 2026. Sr. Carita was born in Orange, Texas, on October 22, 1935, to the late Louis and Elsie Conzelmann Ulm. She was preceded in death by her siblings Elsie Louise Darst, Mary Ruth Nolan, Louis Ulm, Jr., Catherine Fore, Claire Rolen, Hildegarde Bulovas, Fr. John Ulm, and Sr. Miriam Ulm, OP. She is survived by her siblings, Dolores Simar of Orange, Texas, and Amelia Scales of The Woodlands, Texas. She is also survived by many nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces who loved her dearly.
Following her graduation from St. Mary High School in Orange, Texas, in 1954, Sr. Carita entered the Dominican Sisters of Houston. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education and English at Dominican College in Houston. She completed advanced studies in Scripture and Spirituality at Aquinas Institute in St. Louis, Missouri, and at St. Stephen Priory in Dover, Massachusetts. She also completed courses in leadership and administration at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, and Mary Hardin Baylor in Belton, Texas.
Sr. Carita served as an elementary school teacher at Holy Rosary School, Houston; Sacred Heart School, Galveston, Texas; St. Pius X School, Beaumont, Texas; St. Jerome School, Houston; St. Mary Cathedral School, Galveston, Texas; Corpus Christi School, Houston; Dominican Elementary School, Galveston, Texas; and Holy Rosary School, Rosenberg, Texas. She also ministered as principal at Queen of Peace School in Houston and later as principal, teacher, and religion coordinator for many years at St. Mary Elementary School in Taylor, Texas. She continued her teaching ministry at St. Charles Borromeo School in Houston, St. Philip the Apostle School in El Campo, Texas, and St. Mary Elementary School in Taylor, Texas.
Her congregational service included her ministry as a receptionist at St. Dominic Villa. She also enjoyed assisting with community activities and events. She was especially fond of decorating the St. Dominic Villa for any holiday.
Sr. Carita spent her life in the service of others. She was a woman of deep faith and grace who instilled in others the values of excellence, determination, and hard work. One of her favorite hobbies was baking delicious cinnamon rolls to everyone’s delight.
Sister’s body will be welcomed at 4 p.m., and the vigil service will be at 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, at St. Dominic Villa Chapel, 6504 Almeda Rd. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Alberto Maullon on Monday, May 18, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Dominic Villa Chapel. Burial is at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery, at 1 p.m. In lieu of the usual remembrances, donations may be made to Dominican Sisters of Houston, 6501 Almeda Road, Houston, TX, 77021.
