

Sister Miriam Meskill, C.V.I., died on March 6, 2013. She was born in Koblenz, Germany, on May 10, 1922 and returned to the U.S. that same year. Sister attended St. Patrick’s school and Ursuline Academy in Galveston. She entered the Congregation of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament in 1938 and made final Profession of Vows on June 6, 1944.
Sister did her degree work at Incarnate Word College in San Antonio, Catholic University, Library Science and an MRE at the University of St. Thomas in Houston. She taught school, both elementary and high school, for many years - Marian High School, Incarnate Word Academy, Bishop Byrne High School in Port Arthur and taught in several elementary schools in the Galveston-Houston and Beaumont Diocese. She was CCE Coordinator for St. Peter and Immaculate Conception Parishes in Groves, Tex. She also served on the Administration of the Congregation. In her retiring years she helped in whatever capacity she could, but her health curtailed many of her activities in her later years.
Sr. Miriam was a gracious and gentle person who loved God, her family, Religious Community and those whose lives she touched. The closing words of her autobiography are: “I owe a deep debt of gratitude to many persons responsible for the benefits and opportunities I have enjoyed: wonderful family, wonderful religious family, wonderful friends. Most of all, to the Lord and His Blessed Mother for gifts and guidance, I am grateful.”
Sister was preceded in death by her parents, Dick and Cora Meskill; her brother Richard and sister Jane. Her survivors include her brother Bill and his family, her sister Cora Lee, her cousins and many good friends.
Visitation will be on Friday, March 8, 2013 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Incarnate Word Convent Chapel at 3400 Bradford Place, Houston, Texas, followed by the Wake Service. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at the convent Chapel on Saturday, March 9, 2013 with Rev. Carl Belisch, C.S.B., celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow in Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.
