Sister Placidus was born in 1922 to Michael and Bridget (Grady) Rouine in Moymore, Ennistymon, Co. Clare, Ireland. Her birth name was Eileen and she was the eighth and the youngest child in her family. She entered the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word on December 28, 1937 at St. Michael Convent in Carrigoran, Ireland. Sr. Placidus consecrated her life to God by Perpetual Profession of Vows on June 6, 1951.
Sister was certified in Louisiana, Texas, and Utah as an elementary school teacher. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Incarnate Word College in San Antonio and a Master’s degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. In the fall of 1948, the Congregation opened its first Catholic elementary school in Alexandria, Louisiana. Sr. Placidus was amongst the first teachers to be missioned there. She devotedly taught in many of the schools staffed by the Congregation, mainly: St. Frances Cabrini, Alexandria, LA; Our Lady of Fatima, Texas City, TX; St. Francis of Assisi, Houston, TX; St. Michael High School, Carrigoran, Ireland and St. Ann, Salt Lake City, UT. Sister also served as Principal at St. Francis of Assisi School, Houston, TX and James L. Collins Catholic School in Corsicana, TX. Sr. Placidus was greatly respected by her students and their parents. Throughout the years, she continued to work on her teaching skills by participating in many workshops and refresher courses. After teaching for almost half a century, Sr. Placidus was missioned to St. Joseph Villa in Salt Lake City, UT to serve the elderly. It was quite an adjustment to transition from teaching young people to working with the elderly. However, this was a ministry that Sister enjoyed immensely. Sister Placidus retired from active ministry in 2003 to devote her life to prayer. Sister learned so much from the young and the old alike — “how to live and how to die gracefully.” Sister was especially grateful to God for all His goodness to her.
Sister Placidus’s immediate family has preceded her in death. She is survived by nieces and nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews in Ireland, England, and Australia.
We extend a special thanks to the Sisters and Staff at St. Placidus Place Community for their gentle and loving care during Sister’s later years.
Sister Placidus’s body will be received privately at the Immaculate Conception Chapel, Villa de Matel, 6510 Lawndale Street, Houston, Texas at 5:00 PM on January 19, 2021, followed by Evening Praise and a celebration of her life. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the Immaculate Conception Chapel at 10:30 AM on January 20, 2021. A private Rite of Committal will follow at Villa de Matel Cemetery.
