Stanley graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in 1959 and did his internship at the Mt. Sinai Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Following this training Stanley joined the United States Air Force with the rank of Captain and was stationed at Biggs Air Force Base in El Paso, Texas. He enjoyed serving as the chief medical officer and socializing with friends he met in the civilian community.
While in the Air Force friends introduced him to Barbara Fields both of whom were attending a bullfight in Juárez, Mexico. The two were easily attracted to one another and were married in June, 1962 by a Jewish chaplain stationed at Fort Bliss Army base.
As he completed his service in the Air Force, Stan had applied for and had earned a spot in the Baylor College of Medicine, Department of Neurosurgery training program in Houston, Texas. The young marrieds headed off to Houston in August driving a big Buick with no air conditioner. By 1967 the training was complete and Stanley hung his shingle on the door. He had known since childhood that he wanted to be a doctor and this was the beginning of the rest of their lives.
They started their family in 1964 with the arrival of their daughter Michele, in 1965 with a son Steven and a 1968 with another son Marc all of whom grew up, married and soon gave them a total of five grandchildren.
Adding to their family Stanley and Barbara brought Lalo, a close and loving friend, into their lives and their home. Lalo soon married Jennifer and later when they found they had a baby on the way, they were invited to continue living with Stanley and Barbara. With the addition of Lalo and Jennifer two more were added to the list of grandchildren.
Stanley and Barbara were married for 56 wonderful years. Stanley practiced neurosurgery for approximately 35 years primarily at Memorial Southwest Hospital and then had to retire in 1996 due to health reasons. He enjoyed helping people and that young boy who knew he wanted to be a doctor made that dream come true.
Stanley is survived by his wife Barbara, his children and several grandchildren, his sister Rochelle Jaye, sister Faye Landey, sister-in-law Judy Crum, their families, several nieces, nephews and their children all of whom will miss this wonderful man. Stanley loved the friends he made and he loved worshipping and studying at Beth Yeshurun Synagogue as well as with the friends and neighbors in the Chasidic community.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers that a donation be made to a charity of your choice in the memory of Stanley J Hite.
