

Velma Lee Lowe Johnson age 90, wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on February 24, 2013, Lee was born October 19, 1922 in Lynn County, Texas to Velma Maude Lowe and Richard Leeland Lowe. She grew up in Littlefield, Texas. After high school, Lee moved with her family to San Diego, CA. where she attended San Diego State College. Lee became a war bride when she married Marine Captain Edward Duffy Johnson April 15, 1944. She and Ed lived in Houston and Dallas where they had five children. Lee was preceded in death by: her parents; son Edward Duffy Johnson, Jr.; daughter Patricia Lee Toon; husband Edward. D. Johnson; sister Dorothy Shellum; and son in law Stephen B. Toon. She is survived by daughters and sons in law Joanne and Larry Doherty, Christine and Warren Cole, Cathy and George Goolsby. She is also survived by grandchildren Jennifer Jurkus, Sister Maria Catherine(Laura Toon), Megan Doherty, Austin Doherty, Lisa McCumber, Mara McCumber, Wyatt Goolsby, Ward Goolsby, niece Lynn Dufresne and nephew Paul Shellum. Lee was a teacher and director of Beth Israel Day School. She was a good and hardworking mother and grandmother whose outgoing personality gained her many loyal friends. She loved bridge, books and travel. In her last years, she was a resident of Bayou Manor where she enjoyed writing for the Manor Banner newspaper.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at Earthman Bellaire Funeral Home, 6700 Ferris St. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 6800 Buffalo Speedway. A reception will follow. The Rite of Committal will then be at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery at 1:00 p.m.
