Virginia grew up in Baytown and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1951. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1955. During her university years, she was a proud member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority.
On August 25, 1956, Virginia married Charles Hunt at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Houston. She devoted herself to raising their two children while enjoying time with family and friends and volunteering with numerous organizations in the Houston area.
In 1962, Virginia and Charles built a beach house on the west end of Galveston Island. It became a place she truly loved. Whether sailing her Sunfish, fishing in West Bay, searching the beach for shells and shark’s teeth, or watching the sunset with family and friends, Virginia always felt at home at the beach.
Virginia treasured time with her family, including her three sisters. Later in life, trips with her sisters to Laity Lodge became especially meaningful, bringing friendships, lasting memories, and new artwork for her home.
Virginia was also an avid and highly competitive bridge player. She enjoyed the game throughout her life, until dementia prevented her from playing at the level she expected of herself.
Virginia lived with dementia for many years, facing the confusion and frustration it brought with perseverance. Following the untimely death of her daughter, Mary Ruthe, in 2024, she moved to Dallas. There, she lived in the Juliette Fowler community, receiving care and support as her dementia progressed, until her passing.
Virginia is survived by her son, Walter Hunt, and his wife, Julie; her sister, Shirley Bonham; her grandchildren, Chris Wright, Matthew Hunt, Kimberly Jones, and Melanie Hunt; and seven great-grandchildren.
“Whenever you want to see me, always look at the sunset; I will be there.”
