

Virginia Wood, 97, died a grace filled and peaceful death in her room at St. Dominic Village, at 8:22 P.M., on August 6, 2015; The Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. Two of her sons were at her bedside. Virginia received the Last Rites of the Church and the Sacrament of the Sick prior to her death.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2:00 P.M., on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at St. Dominic Village, Warren Chapel in Houston, Texas. The main celebrant will be Rev. Robert Garrity, a personal friend of the family. Reception to follow. Viewing and Rosary will begin at 1:00 P.M. Virginia will be interned with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C, on a future date to be determined.
Virginia was born November 3, 1917, in Harrisville, New York to Edward and Edna Nolan. Her father was a plant manager for International Paper Company. During her childhood and teenage years her father’s managerial assignments took Virginia and her family to Madawaska, Maine, Chillicothe, Ohio, and Ft. Edward, New York. It was in Ft. Edward where she met her future husband, Robert Wood.
Virginia graduated from high school in Maine and later attended Ohio University to study in the College of Education. On December 27, 1938, she and Robert were married. Virginia worked as a primary school teacher prior to dedicating herself to raising three sons.
Her husband was a World War II veteran and career officer in the United States Air Force reaching the rank of Full Colonel prior to his retirement in 1965. During his military career Virginia and the family lived in Nagoya, Japan; Syracuse, New York; Montgomery, Alabama; and Falls Church, Virginia. After his retirement from the military Virginia lived in Tallahassee, Florida; Columbia, South Carolina; and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Upon her husband’s death in 2001, Virginia moved to Jacksonville, Florida where she lived until 2013, when she relocated to Houston to be near family.
Virginia was a devoted member of the Roman Catholic Church, a dedicated wife of 63 years, a devoted mother, and an accomplished artist having produced many fine works in oil, acrylic, and watercolour. Her other interests included reading, traveling, and gardening.
Mrs. Virginia Nolan Wood is survived by her brother, Robert Nolan, sister, June Oliver; 3 sons and their spouses, Robert Wood, Jr. (Sandra), Peter Wood, Christopher Wood (Helene); and 6 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Edward Nolan.
