Cary Vernon Smith

He was born December 21, 1942 in Ruffin, South Carolina, to the late George and Mary (Taylor) Smith.

As a proud veteran of the United States Air Force for 21 years, he enjoyed his retirement traveling the world, playing golf and eating out every chance he could.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Mary Christine Smith.

Cary is survived by his wife of 44 years, Teresa (Schaedler) Smith and his former wife, Le Esta Smith. His children, Gregory (Shannon) Smith and Bryan Smith; and grandchildren, Amanda Cedeno, Spencer Gustin, Ryan Smith, Audrey (Aiden) Shaughnessy, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Van Dyke, Gavyn Smith, Bryauna Smith along with his great-grandchildren, Braden Cedeno, Brooklyn Smith, Aubree Cedeno and Elsie Shaughnessy; and brother, Dwight Smith; and other beloved family members.

He was an active member of Christ United Church of Christ along with the Moose Lodge and Elks Lodge.

A visitation for Cary will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2026 from 4:00 P.M.- 8:00 P.M. at Valhalla Gaerdner Holten Funeral Home, Belleville, IL.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 10, 2026 at 10:00 A.M. at Church United Church of Christ, 26 N. 14th Street, Belleville, IL 62220.

A private family service will be held at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to to his church, Christ United Church of Christ. Donations may be given at the visitation or funeral.
