Mr. Schaeffer was a retired Operating Engineer. He was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, he served in the United States Navy during the Korean War on The U.S.S. Sicily.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Schaeffer, nee Iven; parents, Charles and Rosa, nee Reinheimer, Schaeffer; a brother, Walter (Rose) Schaeffer and a sister, Gladys (Kenneth) Mueller.
Surviving are his loving and devoted children, Kevin Schaeffer and Connie (Timothy) Cates; grandchildren, Dylan Schaeffer, Samantha Cates and Heather Cates; great grandchildren, Dei Schaeffer, Ellie Barham, Laney Barham and Aubrey Barham; four nieces, Charlene Imming, Marianne Recker, Cynthia Mueller and Mary Rose Elliott; great grandniece, Rachel Rouse, also survived by numerous grand nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Valhalla Gaerdner Holten Funeral Home, Belleville, Illinois and again on Friday, February 24, 2017 from 8 am to 9:30 am at the funeral home.
Service: Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 24, 2017 at Queen Peace Catholic Church, Belleville, Illinois with Father Matthew Elie officiating.
Interment will follow in Valhalla Gardens of Memory, Belleville, Illinois.
