

Dorothy E. Hawkins (nee O’Brien), 90, of Swansea, IL passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 3, 2025. She is preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Bernice Erkman; her sister, Susan O'Brien; and her loving husband of 67 years, James “Jim” Hawkins. She is survived by her children, James A. (Diane) Hawkins, Sr. of St. Jacob, IL, Richard P. (Jayma) Hawkins, Sr. of Shiloh, IL, and Susan L. (Bob) Kistenmacher of Alton, IL; grandchildren, James “Jimmie” (Kelli) Hawkins, Jennifer (Derek) Baugh, Richard “Rich” (Sonali Patel) Hawkins, Andrew (Kelly) Hawkins, Lauren (Shawn) Thorstad, and Lindsay (Tyler Gilleland) Kistenmacher; great grandchildren, Mason, Tanner, Sydney, Hudson, Chase, Hailey, and Jocelyn; and her brother, Edward “Skip” (Cheryl) Erkman, Jr. Dear aunt, cousin and friend to many.
Dorothy was a devoted Christian and member of Grace Church in Fairview Heights. Dorothy and Jim lived full lives filled with love for family and friends. In their younger days, Dorothy and Jim went on many vacations with friends and family including many summers at Carlyle Lake and fishing in Minnesota. Dorothy was a dedicated ball player’s wife whose kids grew up at the ballpark where lifelong friendships were formed and countless memories made. Dorothy was an incredible wife, mom, grandma, and great grandma.
Dorothy was an avid bowler and bowled on women’s leagues for years. She spent almost her entire life exercising and staying fit and active. Her daily walks were very important to her. She also enjoyed shopping, going to movies and dining out.
She and Jim not only attended Grace Church but also assisted with church activities as much as they could. Dorothy worked as a funeral assistant at the church even in her later years. Her dedication and service to the church was immeasurable. She was a selfless lady who always rooted for the underdog. Even as a resident at the assisted living facility, she was always doing things to help others. Her beautiful smile and kind heart will be lovingly remembered.
Friends may visit on Wednesday, July 9, 2025 at Valhalla Gaerdner Holten Funeral Home, 3412 Frank Scott Pkwy W, Belleville, IL 62223 from 10 am until time of service at noon with Dr. Phil Silsby officiating.
Following the service, Dorothy will be laid to rest at Valhalla Gardens of Memory. In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to Grace Church, 5151 N Illinois St, Fairview Heights, IL 62208.
