Helen Elizabeth Holbert, nee Samon, 78, of Edwardsville, Illinois, passed away at her home on January 17, 2021. She was born on November 19, 1942 in Covington, KY. She attended Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville.
Helen married Richard H. Holbert, in Alton, IL, on February 12, 1971.
She retired from Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville. Helen was actively involved in her community. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher and treasurer for the Episcopal Church Women’s Group. Helen was a member of the Edwardsville Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served as the American History and Heritage Award Chairperson. She was a Girl Scout leader for 16 years and coached softball in Edwardsville, IL. Helen was one of the founders of the Belleville Area Humane Society and volunteered for various no kill animal shelters. She volunteered at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL, instructed CPR and first aid classes for the American Red Cross and was a recipient of the Clara Barton Award.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Gobel W. Samon, Elizabeth M. Berens and stepfather, Robert H. Berens.
She is survived by her husband, Richard H. Holbert; her children, Elizabeth L. (Thomas) Treat of Edwardsville, IL, Neil R. (Patricia) Voorhees of Houston, TX, and Victoria L. (Jeffrey) Shipp of Pflugerville, TX; grandchildren, Ashleigh (Michael) Murphy, Justin McCord, Taylor Johnson, Corinne Voorhees and Cassandra Voorhees; and great grandchildren, Madelyn Murphy, Elizabeth Murphy, Carter Veljacic, Jacob Johnson, Addison Voorhees and Austin Karr.
Helen will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Her love and laughter will remain with us always.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Belleville Area Humane Society.
Due to COVID-19 mitigations, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Interment will be held privately in Valhalla Gardens of Memory in Belleville, Illinois.
