Marcella "Marcie" J. Altman

Marcie was born August 6, 1931 in East St. Louis, IL to Martin and Marie (Winkelmeyer) DeMonge.

She married Joseph “Joe” L. Altman on May 28, 1953 and he preceded her in death on March 20, 2015.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; her son, Joseph R. Altman; brother-in-law, James Altman and sister-in-law, Norine Altman.

Marcie is survived by her daughters, Julie Altman of Belleville, IL and Lori Nevener of Belleville, IL; daughter-in-law, Kay Altman of Belleville, IL; grandchildren, Evan Altman, Staci Altman, Andrew (Kathy) Nevener and Kelli (Yancy) Carden; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Jace, Jayton, Olivia, Cage, Bella and Ruby; brother, Melvin (Susan) DeMonge of Belleville, IL; and her nieces and nephews, Amy (Jim), Jane (Dan), Nancy, Melissa (Kevin), Doug (Debbi) and Curt (Linda); and many beloved great nieces and great nephews.

Years ago, Marcie worked in education as a dedicated teacher, touching the lives of countless students. After several years in the classroom, she embraced her most cherished role as a homemaker, caring for her family with warmth, patience, and grace.

Marcie had a lifelong fascination with genealogy and spent many years traveling near and far to research family histories and uncover the stories of generations past. Her love of discovery and attention to detail helped preserve a rich legacy for her family, one that will be treasured for years to come.

Her daughters have fond memories of growing up and their family vacations, traveling throughout the United States in their family’s travel trailer, sightseeing and making memories that have truly lasted a lifetime.

Marcie and Joe were snowbirds for many years, calling Florida home during the cold Illinois winter months. They were also members of the former Hope Church in Belleville, IL and more recently, Marcie was very active with Union United Methodist Church in Belleville, IL. Within the church, she was involved with the quilting group and the choir, sharing her many talents with others.

Marcie will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.

A private family service will be held at a later date. The family has entrusted Valhalla Gaerdner Holten Funeral Home in Belleville, IL with arrangements.
