Mary J. Knaup (nee Pita), 82, of Cahokia, IL passed away suddenly on August 13, 2019. She is preceded in death by her father, Michael Pita and grandson, Michael J. Knaup. Mary is survived by her loving husband, James R. Knaup (Married April 11, 1955); her mother, Johanna Pita of Pottstown, PA; and a sister, Lillian Ewing; children, Elizabeth Knaup of Pottstown, PA; Michael (Robin) Knaup of Lyman, ME; Joseph (Patricia) Knaup of Columbia, IL; Theresa (Tomas) Sabaduquia of Clinton, IL; and Ann (the late John) Van Horn of Belleville, IL; grandchildren, Kelle (Ed) Potter, Christopher (Molly) Knaup, Jack (Becky) Hunt, Brandon Cadell, Anthony (Jamie) Knaup, Zachary (Suzy) Knaup, Kelly (Brian) Dugan, Jacob (Shelby) Knaup, Christina (Dustin) Hite, Lisa (Matt) Groves, and Angela Sabaduquia; great grandchildren, Max, Caleb, and Ashleigh Potter, Felicity and Adalade Knaup, Destiney Wade and Michael Knaup II, Dylan, Bella, and Johnny Knaup, Malayna, Savanna, and Brooklynn Knaup, Lucy, Charlie, and Claire Dugan, Rachel Knaup, Kristin and Kaylynn Hite, and Addi, Jenna, and Calvin Groves; great great grandchildren, Bentley, Ali, and Everleigh; family friend and caregiver, Heather Goddard; several great great grandchildren; dear aunt, cousin, and friend of many.
Mary was a 1954 graduate of Coal Township High School in Pennsylvania. She was a member of Holy Family Parish in Cahokia and her children grew up in that parish. Mary was a dedicated and devoted military wife and was the caregiver of her children as the family travelled the country to many military destinations. She was a strong-willed lady who ran the household with authority and gave her children a strong background in discipline, responsibility, and family love. Mary loved cheering on her New York Mets and Washington Red Skins teams. She was an incredible and devoted caretaker for multiple generations in her family and she will be missed.
Friends may visit on Saturday, August 17, from noon until 2 p.m. at Valhalla Gaerdner Holten Funeral Home, 3412 Frank Scott Parkway W, Belleville, IL 62223.
