Michael Anthony Wheatley, 68, of Dupo, IL passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 3, 2025 at his residence. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph “Jay” and Charlotte (nee Reeg) Wheatley and his first wife, Jeanne (nee Hopkins) Wheatley. Mike is survived by his wife of 24 years, Linda (nee Proffer) Wheatley; children, Krista (Russ Thomas) Wheatley and Michael (Jessica) Wheatley, Angela (Freddy) Garrett, Kara Dell-Hunt, and Mary (Chris) Putnam; grandchildren, Kyleigh, Noah, Kyah, Makayla, Emmitt, Jackson, Jordan, Charlotte, and Katy; mother-in-law, Irma Proffer; and numerous life long friends. Beloved uncle, nephew, and brother-in-law to many.
Mike was a 1975 high school graduate of Dupo High School. He retired from the US Postal Service after more than 37 years as Postmaster for post offices in New Douglas and East Carondelet, IL. Mike was intelligent, stubborn, witty, and the self-proclaimed winner of all arguments! Many would say he earned his PhD in “BS.”
Mike lived a very full 68 years. Mike was a 32nd Degree member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Southern IL and enjoyed many local parades in the Ainad Shriner’s Compact Unit as well as handing candy to children as “Moppy”, the The Ainad Krazy Klown, for many years. He loved fishing and boating—especially with his grandchildren. Mike and Linda enjoyed numerous road trips on his Harley Road King Classic with great friends. Their adventures took them to many fun places together. Mike loved sports and spent time as a baseball and softball coach. As a proud father, he supported his daughter’s theatre and music events and his son’s baseball years. Mike and Bear worked together passionately on health and fitness as well. Mike earned medals in the Senior Olympics for weightlifting and still holds two world records for his age group.
Mike selflessly chose to offer his body to the St. Louis University Anatomical Gift Program. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, September 26, 2025 at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Garden Level (lower level beneath the church), 411 Palmer Rd., Columbia, IL 62236.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to Hospice of Southern IL and Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.
The family would like to graciously thank Hospice of Southern IL for their comfort and care during these last few weeks. Please offer condolences and share memories at www.valhallagardensandfuneralhome.com.
