

Randy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle and friend. He treasured his family and adored his grandchildren. He never missed an opportunity to tell them how proud he was of them. He met the love of his life, Valerie, as a senior at Belleville West. After dating for five years, they were married on August 9, 1975. For the next 40 years, they were inseparable until Valerie passed away eight years ago.
Randy started his career at Southwestern Bell and retired as a Vice President of AT&T after 35 years. For those that worked with and for him, he was known for being tough, but honest and fair. His years of service left him with lifelong friends and memories. He was a passionate sports fan and attended college at Eastern University where he played and later coached football. He rarely missed a Rams, Cardinals, Blues or Chiefs game. Randy appreciated spending time with friends playing golf, poker, bridge and euchre. He enjoyed trivia games, playing Risk and watching game shows. He never let anyone beat him at board games - He loved to win.
Randy loved spending time with his family. He supported all his daughters’ activities, from band and theater to cheerleading and soccer - even coaching the Bruisin’ Babes soccer team. Randy served on the Harmony Emge-Ellis School Board for many years. He instilled a love of reading in his family and was passionate about great films.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Valerie (nee Hoffmann) Hargraves, his parents Norman and Mary (nee Kilborne) Hargraves and in-laws Jerry and Betty (nee Moore) Hoffmann.
He is survived by his two daughters, Holley (George) Aplin and Brittney (Grant) Mechlin. He was “Pa Pa” to five precious grandchildren: Jerry Aplin, Bree Aplin, Violet Aplin, Josie Mechlin and Mia Mechlin. Also surviving are his loving sister and brother-in-law Stan and Gayla VanSant, nephew Ian (Yasmin) VanSant, great-nephew Akram VanSant, brother Rick Hargraves and dear friend Donna Nowak. He will be deeply missed by family and countless friends whose lives he touched.
Visitation will be Saturday, March 2nd, 2024, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at Valhalla Gaerdner Holten Funeral Home, Belleville, Illinois.
