Rosemarie was born April 27, 1935, in Dupo, IL to Milo Everett and Jewell Laveda (Chamness) Rains.
She married Herbert L. Sutter on October 3, 1953, in Dupo, IL. After forty years of marriage, they divorced but remained friends. He preceded her in death on April 30, 2015.
She was also preceded in death by her parents Milo and Jewell: siblings; James (Olivia “Sis”) Rains and Robert (Jacqueline) Rains; sister-in-law, Carol Rains; and nephew, Randy Rains.
Rosemarie is survived by her children, Andrea (Matt) O’Connell of Columbia, IL, Margo Sutter of Millstadt, IL, Adrienne (James) Otten of St. Libory, IL, Rosanne (Rick Becherer) Sutter of Caseyville, IL, Herb Sutter II “Bub” of Columbia, IL and Tammy Bentrott of Colorado Springs, CO; three grandchildren, Zachary (Mariel Cotton) Keller, Aaron (Alexus) Sutter, and Aurora (Tim) O’Connell; great-grandson, Miles Joseph O’Connell; her brother, Kenneth Rains of Russellville, AR; and many beloved cousins on the Rains and Sutter sides.
“We love because he first loved us.” 1 John 4: 19.
Rosemarie was a larger-than-life personality. Her love of others reflected Christ’s love for her, which was profound. Her humility and compassion for others were instinctive. She was everybody’s mother. Rosemarie welcomed every child in the neighborhood and treated each one like her own. Her hospitality and generosity were legendary. She welcomed all to her table, gave those who were lonely a family, and saw every person for the best parts of themselves. She was the bedrock of her family; her children were her existence. Her kindness, acceptance, and love for others will shine through the lives of all who knew and loved her for years to come.
Rosemarie’s childlike wonder and love for nature inspired her favorite activity: long country rides with her son, Bub, while enjoying her true love, fountain soda.
A graveside service for Rosemarie will be held on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 11:30 A.M. at Valhalla Gardens of Memory in Belleville, IL.
In memory of Rosemarie’s generous spirit, please donate to Concord Presbyterian Church, Waterloo, IL.
