Angel C. Maza was born on May 12, 1943 in Rizal, Nueva Ecija, Philippines as the fourth of eight children. In 1966, he married Warlita Valin and had two children together, Joy and Joel. With his Bachelor’s of Arts in Education, he taught high school world history at a private school.
In 1969, he applied for a U.S. foreign student visa with the assistance of his uncle, Blas Maza, to further his education. He was granted the visa and arrived in the U.S. on December 1969. He attended Seattle Pacific College (now Seattle Pacific University) where he earned a Bachelor’s of Arts in Political Science and a minor in English. After graduating, he returned to the Philippines to be with his family. Before returning home, his older brother Sadiri and sister-in-law Agatha petitioned him and his family to emigrate to the U.S. After arriving in the Philippines, he further advanced his education by earning his law degree and was blessed with three more children, Jeffy, Jazzle and Janette.
After his brother’s petition was approved, he and his family emigrated to the U.S. in 1985. For the next several years, he diligently worked various jobs to provide for his family. After eventually receiving a position with King County as a Transit Operator, he worked in that capacity for the next 20 years. In addition, with his background and education in law, he frequently assisted family and friends with legal advice.
Given the carpentry skills and talent he inherited from his late father, he built his own family home in West Seattle which he landscaped and adorned with beautiful gardens he loved. He also established a ministry foundation in the Philippines in honor and in the name of his late father Pastor Juan G. Maza (“PASJUGMA”) to support several local churches in Rizal.
After retiring in 2009, he pursued his love of travel and nature by frequently going on road trips to various National Parks, camping with his family, and regularly returning to the Philippines to continue his work with his charitable foundation, visit families, and tend to his various properties.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years Warlita, daughter Joy and son-in-law Fausto, son Joel and daughter-in-law Maricel, son Jeffy, daughters Jazzle and Janette; and six grandchildren, Blessedjoy, Joshua James, Abigail Lynn, Caleb James, Elizabeth Marie and Sarahjoy.
