Brenda Friedenthal Etter

Brenda Friedenthal Etter, 87, of Seattle, Washington, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2026, surrounded by music and love. She will be remembered as a woman of deep intellect, boundless curiosity, and unwavering compassion.

Born on April 28, 1939, in Brooklyn, New York, Brenda was the daughter of Isidore and Claire Friedenthal. She spent her childhood in New York, Michigan, and Connecticut with her older brother, Richard, and graduated from Roger Ludlowe High School in Fairfield, Connecticut.

A lifelong learner, Brenda earned her Bachelor of Science in Speech Pathology and Audiology, with a minor in English, from the University of Connecticut in 1961, followed by a Master of Science from Syracuse University in 1963. She continued her academic journey through doctoral studies at Stanford University and the University of Washington. Even after her formal education ended, she remained an enthusiastic student of the world - always reading, asking questions, and embracing new interests.

In 1966, Brenda married the love of her life, Irwin Etter. After moving to Seattle, they welcomed their daughter, Andrea, and built a home filled with conversation, laughter, and learning. Their partnership rooted in mutual respect, intellectual curiosity, and shared commitment to family and community. Together they enjoyed traveling, attending the symphony and opera, playing bridge with friends, and nurturing a warm, welcoming household.

Professionally, Brenda worked as an audiologist, helping people improve their quality of life through better hearing and communication. Later, she discovered a new calling in financial planning, where she again focused on supporting others – this time by helping them build secure futures. In every role, her work was guided by empathy, insight, and a genuine desire to make a difference.

Service to others was a defining part of Brenda's life. She devoted her time and talents to numerous organizations, including the 43rd District Democrats, the National Organization for Women (NOW), Hadassah, Brandeis University, and many other civic and community groups. She believed deeply in advocacy, volunteerism, and lifelong engagement with her community.

Family and friends knew Brenda as an intelligent, thoughtful, and energetic woman whose interests were as varied as they were enduring. She found joy in classical music and the arts; loved a good game of bridge; delighted in reading; and treasured opportunities to spend time with her family.

Above all, Brenda was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. She was preceded in death by her husband, Irwin, and her brother Richard. She is survived by her daughter, Andrea; son-in-law, Eric; grandchildren, Karsten and Aliya; sister-in-law Honey, niece, Julie, and Julie’s children; as well as many extended family members, friends, and colleagues whose lives she touched with her kindness, generosity, and spirited engagement in the world.

Brenda's intelligence, curiosity, and compassion will be remembered by all who knew her, and her legacy lives on in the many people she inspired.

A memorial service and reception will be held on August 5, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Sunset Hills Memorial Park 1575 145th Place SE, Bellevue, WA 98007.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations in Brenda's memory be made to Northwest Kidney Centers and Temple Beth Am.
