April 22, 1921 – June 15, 2015
Earl Moran Sherman was born to Harriet Martha Moran and Earl Wells Sherman on April 22, 1921 in Seattle, WA. Earl was the oldest of five children. He graduated from Oak Harbor High School on Whidbey Island, WA in 1940. He joined the United States Navy and was stationed in San Francisco and in the Philippines. After leaving the service, he attended the University of Washington, where he graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. He was hired by the Boeing Company in 1949, where he worked until 1985.
Earl met Beatrice (Susie) Bjorkman in 1948 in Seattle and they were married in 1951. In 1953 they started building their home on Mercer Island, where they lived for the next 62 years. Son Mark was born in 1954, daughter Mary Ann was born in 1956 and daughter Terry in 1959. Earl has seven grandchildren all living in the Seattle area.
Earl loved the outdoors, skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer. All his kids grew up loving the outdoors as well. Once Earl retired from Boeing, he bought a truck and he and Beatrice began traveling all around the country. They also traveled six times to England, hiking the Heritage Footpaths with only small day packs and staying at Bed and Breakfasts in the English countryside. Typically the hikes ranged from 80 to 100 miles. He was 75 at the time of his last English hike.
Earl leaves behind his wife of sixty-three years Beatrice; son Mark Sherman, his wife Ellen and their three children, Beth, Paul and Sarah; daughter Mary Ann Vasatka, her husband James and their three children, Calli, Karen and Janae; and daughter Terry Kerns, her husband Mike and son Simon.
We will miss him dearly.
