Fred was born and raised in Hong Kong. At the age of 18 in 1969, Fred came to Seattle to meet his father, George Yee, who was a partner at the Wah Young Company in Seattle’s Chinatown. Fred’s family has been in the United States since the late 1800s, having his grandfather Ming Yee pass in Seattle in 1943. He is the fourth generation of his family to come to the United States.
Interested in community work, Fred volunteered with the API community since 1972. He spent over 35 years working professionally in health and human service programs administration, retiring as the Region X Minority Health Consultant for the Federal Office of Minority Health in Seattle in July 2011. For almost four decades, Fred volunteered and served in leadership roles with a number of non-profit organizations in Seattle throughout his career and retirement, including Kin On Community Health, Yee Fung Toy Association, and the Chinese Information & Service Center (CISC), amongst many others. He won several community service awards, including: International Community Health Services' (ICHS) Bamboo Award (2012), Northwest Asian Weekly's Top Contributor Award (2014), and Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) - Greater Seattle's Golden Circle Award (2016).
Living life to the fullest, Fred traveled to every continent in the world except for Africa, which he had plans to do. He was an avid traveler and cruise-lover, table-tennis and mah-jong player, and karaoke singer. Fred’s first wife Amy Wong passed in 2000 after a battle with cancer. He remarried in 2004 to Clara Cheung. Fred is survived by his wife Clara and her daughters Veronica Ho (husband Spencer Wong) and Joanne Ho; his daughter Andrea Yee (husband Jonathan Glass); son Alex Yee (wife Meesha Yee) and grandchild, Koehn Yee.
