He was born on January 30, 1935 in Seattle, WA. He attended elementary at Fauntleroy Grade School, and attended James Madison Junior High School. His freshman year was spent at West Seattle High School. Jerry, his parents, and younger brother Jack then moved to Lake Sammamish. He was a class of 1952 graduate from Lake Washing High School. Jerry was married to his wife, Roberta “Birdie” for 58 years.
Jerry joined the US Army Signal Corps. and was a Communication Technician in the field of teletype and then later cryptography. He served in Korea in the capacity of Non-Commissioned Officer In Charge (NCOIC) of the 8th Army Communications Center. During this time he received the National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.
After his Honorable Discharge, he worked for the Boeing Company as an Inspector. While at the Boeing Company he became active in the Aero Mechanics Union and ran for, and was elected, to various offices within his Local Lodge. Meanwhile, at the Boeing Company he was promoted to a Tooling Inspector in Quality Control. In 1965 he was asked to serve on the staff of District Lodge 751, and in 1966 was placed as a full time District Staff Assistant with many responsibilities, negotiations being only one of them. He later moved on to the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM&AW).
In 1983 he was laid off and went to work as Office Manager for the law firm of Donaldson & Kiel, P.S. in Seattle He was with them until July 1985, when he was recalled to his previous position with the IAM&AW. Jerry officially retired from Boeing on January 31, 1996 and officially retired from the IAM&AW on December 21, 2007. Jerry had a beautiful life, and now he soars with eagles.
Jerry is survived by his wife Roberta, Daughter, Tina Estes (Jerry Scirica), Grandson’s Jonathan Greathouse, and Christopher Greathouse, 2 great-grandchildren Serenity and Noah and his brother Jack Dargitz (Peggy Dargitz) and nieces & nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday May 4th at 1:00 P.M. at Sunset Hills Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 1215 145th Pl, SE, Bellevue, WA. Interment at Tahoma National Cemetery with Military Honors will follow at a later date.
