Our deepest sympathies to Lise and her family. Hugh was a scholarly, humorous and caring person and we will remember him fondly.

Our hearts are heavy at the loss of a special man, but we can also rejoice in the way that he chose to live.  He embodied kindness, intelligence and compassion and we are all better for having known him.  He will truly be missed.

I remember Hugh very well from his time as a volunteer with us at the Bellevue Police Department. On behalf of all us with BPD, please accept my condolences.

I enjoyed working with Hugh many years ago when we were both Bellevue Police volunteers at the Factoria Community Station. A very nice man, and very much a gentleman.  My most sincere condolences to the family.

I'm told Pop was quite a jock in high school. He had little choice. All three of his older siblings, Frank, John and Ann, had starred in high school athletics and he was expected to carry the baton forward.  From the newspaper clippings I have seen, I gather he made the Burrows family proud on the football field, on the basketball court and on the cinder tracks. He didn't talk about it much. That said, I mostly saw him in his official capacity as a career diplomat, wearing his dark suit.  Work didn't end at 5:00 p.m.  There were always after hours functions the he and my mom were expected to attend.  

However, weekends were special.  As an only child (at that time), living in a foreign land, he was often my only playmate.  There were no organized sports.  Nevertheless, he did his best to introduce me to what American kids did.  We would toss the football, take turns hitting baseballs and, during Moscow winters, play hockey on the ice rink he created.  

That said, it was not until Thanksgiving of 1968, back in the States, that I got to appreciate just how talented he was. It was a ‘family n friends' touch football game and he was the old man on the field, in his late forties. He was a wide receiver on the play.  The call was for him to fake to the outside and then turn down field for a long bomb. Just as he cradled the pass in his arms, he tripped on a tree root.  Instead of the face plant we all expected, much to the amazement of everyone, he simply somersaulted into the end zone for the score.  My jaw was on my chest.  Wow...that was my pop?
