I have indelible memories of working with Jim during his 12 high-impact  years at The Detroit News, when he taught much about our craft and how vital it is to pursue it with integrity, diligence and humility. Jim led by example, with grace, clarity and a vision of community service. He respected readers and those he worked with, and was a multimedia journalist with strong photography skills long before that became more common on shrunken staffs. 

And like a colleague quoted in our hometown coverage, I warmly recall his impish grin. It reflected an infectious spirit that balanced professionalism and joy.
