Joseph “Walt” Butts died in his sleep at the age of 92 on October 21, 2010. He was born on December 25, 1917, the last of seven children in Pueblo, Colorado. He was interested in football & aviation in his early years and excelled in his studies before joining the Navy. One of the defining experiences of Walt’s life took place during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was a naval aviator aboard the U.S. South Dakota and received several commendations, including the air medal for reconnaissance photography during the Battle of Saipan.
In 1946, Walt was honorably discharged from the Navy and married our beautiful mother, Evelyn. They were married for 64 years and dearly loved each other. He was a loving husband and father who always tried to do the right thing. He generously gave to many charities over the years and had a deeply held Catholic faith and love for his family. He was a hard worker most of his life and was a master at crossword puzzles. He enjoyed reading mysteries and playing cribbage with his children when we visited. He had a great sense of humor and was very loving and gracious to all that he loved. Walt is survived by his wife, Evelyn and their children, Diane, Ed, Kathy, Joanne and Wally. He has nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren and another grandchild on the way. Walt, you will be greatly missed and loved always. As much as we will miss you, we know you are waiting for us in Heaven. We will do our best to be worthy of joining you there!
Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, October 28, 2010 at St Madeleine Sophie Catholic Church. 4400 130th Place SE, Bellevue, WA 98006.
