Our beloved Joy died peacefully at home in Kenmore, Washington on August 12th, 2015 after a six and a half year battle with ovarian cancer. Joy was born in Oak Harbor, Washington on July 30th, 1963… the oldest of four children born to Don and Ann Engle. Joy has always been gregarious and social. As a girl she loved the outdoors, riding horses, reading, and 4H activities with friends. Joy loved memorizing Bible verses even at a young age and her faith in Jesus grew steadily throughout her lifetime.
Joy graduated from Oak Harbor High School in 1981, Skagit Valley Community College in 1983 and from Washington State University with a degree in Child and Family Studies in 1986. While at WSU, Joy met the love of her life, Dan Mock, where they were both active in campus ministry. Joy and Dan married in Oak Harbor on August 7th, 1988 and they made their home in the Kenmore area. Joy served as a preschool teacher, administrator and curriculum writer for many years before she traded those titles in for one much more important to Joy - that of “Mom” to Andrew, Elliot and Christina. Joy poured her heart and soul into being the most devoted and loving fulltime mother and nothing made her more happy or proud than her beautiful family.
Joy had the spiritual gifts of compassion and mercy and she helped carry many burdens for others, coming alongside those who were hurting or in need. She truly had the gift of encouragement as well and was constantly reaching out to connect with and lift up those she treasured- her family and her many friends. Joy was an extrovert and needed to be around people. She was very warm and would strike up conversations with people she didn’t know - many of whom became new friends.
Joy loved life, loved to laugh, and was always ready to plan and host a themed party to celebrate someone she loved. Dan called her the “crown jewel” of the family – never has a husband loved a wife more. Joy loved to write and she was a prayer warrior. Joy recently wrote in her journal “God has blessed me so much. I know He loves me and I am His forever more…I could list 1,000 ways God is so good to me”. Joy prayed that she would honor God in all of her days and she inspired many who were also facing loss and adversity to seek His strength. Joy lived up to her name to all who knew her – she truly brought JOY to so many.
Joy will forever be loved and adored by her husband Dan Mock and children Andrew, Elliot, and Christina; mother Ann Temme (George); brothers Bruce Engle (Teresa) and Michael Engle (Ericka); stepmother Mary Engle; Uncle Hugh Koetje (Rosalie), Uncle John Koetje (Cathie), Aunt Betty McCartney (Bruce); Dan’s parents Dean and Arla Mock, Dan’s sisters Susan Fazzari (Greg), Wendy Bircher (Brian), Brenda Harvey (Kevin); 11 first cousins, 20 nieces and nephews, two grand nephews and countless dear friends.
Joy is preceded in death by her grandparents Tom and Orpha Koetje, father Don Engle, uncle Dave Koetje, baby sister Cynthia Christine, and nephew Mathew Fazzari.
