Kwan Chan was born on October 27, 1946 in Toi Shan, Canton, China. He immigrated to Hong Kong in 1954 with his mother and brother, where he finished up his primary, secondary, and high school education. For college, he attended a college in Alberta, Canada where he obtained a degree in chemical engineering.
In the early 1970s, Kwan moved to the United States. He began his life in the United States serving in the army as a combat engineer. Through this time, he was able to travel Europe and gain citizenship in the United States. Not long after being discharged, he met his wife, Shang Chan in Seattle, Washington. He later went on to go further in his studies at the University of Washington and obtained a Masters in Economics. Soon after, he had his first daughter, Anita. To support himself and his family, he worked as a waiter and bartender at South China Dolls.
Kwan was called by his older brother to open up a restaurant in the Tri-Cities in the early 1980s. It was there that his son, Kenny, was born. Eventually, Kwan decided to return back to Seattle in the late 1980s and opened up a restaurant at SeaTac Mall, called Peking Express. In 1990, his last daughter Cynthia was born. He decided to sell the business in 1995 and took over ownership of Sun Ya Seafood Restaurant in Seattle, Washington. He became a big part of the Chinatown community and did not retire until 20 years later.
Kwan Chan passed away peacefully on July 10th, 2019 at the age of 72. He was surrounded by friends and family until his last breath. Thank you for all of your thoughts and support. He will be forever and dearly missed. Thank you and God bless.
