Mary Irma Whalon
December 21, 1923 – April 23, 2021
Mary Irma (Guss) Whalon passed away peacefully on April 23, 2021. Born December 21, 1923 in Italy, Mary and her family emigrated to the United States when she was one month old and settled in Montana where her father worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad.
While she was growing up, they moved to different parts of Montana. When Mary was 14 her brother Joe was born, and when she was 17, they lost their mother. Mary had come to Seattle go to school, but when their mother died, she returned home to Montana to care for her father and her brother Joe for the next eight years.
After returning to Seattle to finish school she met Jim Whalon through a mutual friend. As she told it, her friend knew a single, Catholic, Boeing engineer, Mary said “what are we waiting for.” Jim and Mary married on December 1, 1956 and settled in early Bellevue. They were founding members of St. Louise Church. Mary enjoyed volunteering at St. Louise, knitting, cooking big family dinners, and gardening. People would stop and compliment her yard saying it looked like a park. When Jim retired, the two of them spent many years traveling throughout the United States.
Mary is survived by her children Mary (William), Michael (Mary Frances) and Mark (Emeline). She is also survived by her brother Joe (Maryann) and her grandchildren, Kristen, Patrick, Andrew, Monica, and Luke. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim and her daughter Ann.
Special thanks to Molly, BK, Elvie and the team at Sunrise. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Mary’s name can be made to St. Louise Catholic Church or St. Louise School.
