Born in Hong Kong 1938 to Fuk Man Lee and Sau Sim Lam, Mei then married Thick Wong in 1957 and immigrated to Washington in 1959.
Mei was a fierce, devoted, and brilliant family matriarch adored by her husband of 58 years and her sons. She upheld family dinners, a beloved tradition since the 90s, and simultaneously raised 7 boys and worked as a seamstress until 1981 when Jade House Restaurant was bought in Mercer Island. Jade House, a family business run by all 9 Wong’s, was an Island favorite, operating for 14 years from 1981 to 1995. Never idle, Mei then worked at a store deli for 20 years, alongside being an active member of the Wong Association. In retirement Mei fed her family with love, went on daily walks, cooked for the Association, and tended to her gardens and plants.
Mei is survived by four generations of family – siblings Mei King Yee, Cheung Wing Lee, Kwong Wing Lee, Kwok Wing Lee, Mei Yuk Li, Fu Wing Li, sons Kenny (Susan), Benson (Zinnia), Benny (Gale), James (Terry), Dennis (Lori), Gary (Annette), Timothy (Sunae), grandchildren Michael Street, Maria Ouano, Justin (Anjenette), Jake (Tyler), Nicole, Kaira, Garrett, Aryanna, Malena, Lauren, Brady and great-granddaughter Leylia.
The service is at Sunset Hills Memorial Funeral Home on Saturday, June 15 at 2pm and followed by a burial at the Memorial Park. A celebration of life will be held at Tasty Szechuan in Bellevue after burial. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center or a charity of your choice.
